Herbs That Love the Charlotte Sunshine: Easy Picks for Your Garden

If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping out your back door and snipping a few sprigs of fresh herbs for dinner, spring is the perfect time to make it happen. The Charlotte area’s warm climate and long growing season make it ideal for growing herbs—whether you’re working with a raised bed, a small patio, or just a few sunny containers. Not only do herbs add flavor to your cooking, but many of them also attract pollinators, deter pests, and look beautiful in your garden. Plus, they’re among the easiest plants to grow—great for beginners and seasoned gardeners alike.

Here are some of the best herbs to grow in Charlotte this spring:

Basil A summertime staple, basil loves warm weather and full sun. Pinch off flowers as they appear to keep the leaves sweet and tender—perfect for pesto, caprese salads, or topping your favorite pizza.

Rosemary Hardy and drought-tolerant, rosemary thrives in our climate. Plant it in well-drained soil and give it space to grow—it can become a woody shrub over time! Its fragrant, piney flavor pairs beautifully with roasted veggies and meats.

Thyme This low-growing herb makes a great border plant and thrives in dry, sunny spots. It’s a must-have for seasoning soups, stews, and roasted dishes.

Mint (Container Recommended!) Mint grows fast and will take over a garden bed if left unchecked—so it’s best grown in a pot. It’s perfect for adding a refreshing twist to iced tea, cocktails, or desserts.

Oregano A Mediterranean favorite, oregano is super hardy and produces flavorful leaves all season long. Let it flower for the pollinators, or keep it trimmed for a steady harvest.

Parsley This cool-weather herb does well in both sun and partial shade. It’s perfect as a garnish or added to sauces, soups, and salads. Bonus: it’s high in vitamins A, C, and K!

Chives Chives are easy to grow, and their edible purple flowers add a fun pop to salads. Snip often for a mild onion flavor that works well in dips, dressings, and eggs.

If you need help finding the right local nursery or want to talk about how gardening can boost your curb appeal, I’m just a message away. Happy planting, Charlotte!
